Someone I Sorta Know, Sorta In The News

Back when I was in college I worked for Teresa Sullivan – a labor force demographer. She was a rising star back then going from Associate Professor to Full Professor of both Sociology and Law and then Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in the two years I worked for her. She went on to be one of the Chancellors of the University of Texas System and now she’s no less than Provost of the University Of Michigan – which is WAY up there in academia.

I owe Terry a lot – she provided guidance and a job at a really critical time in my life when my parents were cutting me off and rejecting me and I was conflicted about my sexuality (though I don’t think we ever discussed my being gay). In many ways she was a bit like a mother to me for 2 years and a stable, sane force in my life.

Anyway, her husband is Douglas Laycock – a law professor who’s argued in front of the Supreme Court. He made a comment about gay marriage and Jon Stewart found his name funny and said “…there’s still room to giggle inappropriately at an experts name…” He wondered what it would be like if ABC News had two experts on gay marriage – Dr. Laycock and “Sodomy J. Balltickle”… Start at time code 2:00 to see what I’m talking about…

As Jon Stewart said, the comments are inappropriate. Personally I think Doug Laycock should try to get on The Daily Show – it’s a bit of a status thing these days, even if you’re made fun of in the process…

We’re Happy With Our Choice Of Barak Realty

In a previous post I bemoaned how hard it was to find a good realtor. Well, we picked one and are quite happy with our choice so far… We went with Barak Realty but it was more a matter of choosing agents rather than an agency. For starters they came in as a team of two agents (Maria McCallister and Francisco Menéndez) both of whom live in our coop, so they know the building better than anyone else. Francisco seemed to really understand our particular apartment, and Maria has a analytical side to her that compliments Francisco’s skills really well.

Another big selling point for us was that they were aggressive in what they planned to do, but not to the point of being tacky or inappropriate. Simply put, they were “hungry” for the listing. We had some other brokers give impressive presentations, but Francisco and Maria’s presentation beat them all – mostly through sheer hard work and preparation. Furthermore they were more creative in having marketing strategies that were particularly well targeted for our apartment. We figured if they worked that hard to get the listing they’d work equally hard to sell the the place once they had the listing. Some other agencies just wanted another listing to add to the long list of apartments they were selling – it wasn’t clear we’d get much special attention.

One agent from another firm even referred to Barak as “cockroaches”, but the comment backfired on them since what is better able to adapt after a disaster than a cockroach? Selling real estate in this market after the financial disasters of last year is much like a cockroach scrounging for food. It takes someone who thinks like a cockroach to really prosper in an environment like this.

Their first step was to have photographs, floorplans and virtual tours done by Digit-Tec. Here are the pics they took (click on the pics to see a larger version)…

The pictures are good. The camera distorts things a bit since it had a fish eye lens, but that’s typical for real estate photos. The colors are a bit distorted in some of the pics – they made things lighter and brighter than they are, but again that’s typical for the industry. All in all good photos…

They also did virtual tours which are a bit freaky to watch since there’s so much distortion, but that’s true of all virtual tours. Personally I don’t like virtual tours, but other people like them…

But the real question is whether their efforts and plans are getting results. We had the first open house this past weekend and 21 people signed the signin sheet! That’s actually incredible – it was so far over expectations they ran out of listing sheets for people to take with them. They said about 5 were curious neighbors, but 3 seemed like real prospective buyers which is good as well. On top of that they’ve got a private showing set up for Thursday evening with one of their buyers, and another one late Friday afternoon with a client from another agency. Private showings are good since they tend to be more serious buyers.

A lot of brokers are taking this weekend off since it’s Passover and Easter. Instead Maria and Francisco are dedicated to doing open houses every weekend until there’s an accepted offer and this weekend they’re timing it so maybe they can get people coming from church (there’s one across the street from our building).

It’s been on the market less than a week, but we’re feeling if Maria and Francisco can’t sell it, no one can… They really are giving it their all… Hopefully we’ll get a good offer soon!

Crazy Laws Intended To Protect Children

See the following picture?

Pic of fully clothed guys, but still legal

Technically, it’s illegal for me to show it to you and I could be thrown in jail for it. Why? Because it comes from a photoset that includes sexually explicit photos. Even though the guys are fully clothed it’s illegal to show any picture from the set unless I’m physically in possession of documentation of the guys’ ages. They’re obviously are not under age, and they’re fully clothed, but my using the picture is illegal. To me that’s completely messed up.

Now take a look at this pic…

Illegal picture example

Generally unremarkable, but also illegal for yet another reason that also makes no sense… Beyond the fact that I’m not in physical possession of the age documentation for the models, the model is Canadian and the photo was shot in the US and the model probably only has Canadian ID. His Canadian ID is only legal if the scene was shot outside the US. I understand the immigration and work issues, but how can I be breaking the law because the photo was shot in the US? If the same photo were shot in Canada or Russia or Brazil or the UK I wouldn’t be breaking that part of the law.

These crazy laws were written to protect children. Yet someone could get thrown in jail for not having documentation for someone that clearly not under age (e.g. someone who’s clearly 50 or 60 years old). Unfortunately, because the laws are so screwed up they’re rarely ever enforced and if the government does try to enforce them they can easily be thrown out because they’re so messed up. That means these bad laws are actually not protecting children at all. A good law makes sense and is defensible. A good defensible law would protect children, but we don’t have that.

We need a overhaul of the laws to protect children. It’s a complicated minefield because many teens have been introduced to the fact that they’re sexual beings at a young age. You have teens like Brent Corrigan who present fake IDs because they want to work in the adult industry before they’re 18, and then you have teens who genuinely need to be protected because they’re not ready to deal with all that comes with adult work.

I don’t have the answers, but I do know the current laws make no sense. Hopefully things will get straighted out in the not-too-distant future.

I like the Mk5 VW GTI better than the Mk6

Today VW is revealing the look of the Mark 6 Golf line with the Mk6 GTI. Here’s the pic they sent out yesterday…

2010 VW GTI Mk6

Personally, I don’t really like it. I mean, it’s nice enough and better than a lot of their competitors, but I don’t know that it’s an improvement over the Mk 5 Golf/GTI/R32…

Here’s a Mk 5 GTI…

Mk5 VW GTI

The Mark 5 “face” just has more attitude. The Mk 6 looks more pedestrian. The Mk 6 front end would be fine if it were a Golf/Rabbit, but it doesn’t look sporty. It looks like they’re watering down the appearance of the GTI, which is never a good idea – that’s what the Golf/Rabbit is for.

Oh well, it is what it is. I didn’t like the Mk 5 when I first saw it either, but it grew on me and now I love our Mk 5 R32… We’ll see what I think in a year…
